Description
The Chestnut Crabapple is a cold-hardy, productive fruit tree developed by the University of Minnesota in 1946 as an open-pollinated seedling of ‘Malinda’. It produces attractive creamy-white spring blossoms followed by large, 2-inch crabapples with an exceptional nut-like, sweet flavor and crisp, pleasant texture.
The fruit is excellent for fresh eating and can also be used for baking, cider, and other culinary purposes. It has a medium storage life, making it a practical choice for home orchards. With its rounded form and manageable size, Chestnut Crabapple is well suited for smaller landscapes as well as larger orchard plantings.
Chestnut is partially self-fertile and can produce fruit on its own, but planting another compatible apple or crabapple nearby will significantly improve fruit production and quality.
