Prairifire Crabapple is a beautiful, disease-resistant flowering crabapple known for its outstanding foliage, vibrant blooms, and attractive year-round color. Developed by Dr. Dan Dayton at the University of Illinois, this variety was named the 1996 Iowa Tree of the Year and is well suited to the Midwest and other cold-climate landscapes.
Prairifire produces stunning red-purple flowers in April and May, blooming later than many other crabapple varieties. New foliage emerges with a maroon tint before maturing to dark green and holds well throughout the summer. Small dark purple-red fruit develops in late summer and remains on the tree rather than dropping, providing food for birds and wildlife.
The glossy dark red bark, marked with prominent lenticels, adds additional winter interest. With an upright, spreading habit that becomes more rounded with age, Prairifire makes an excellent specimen, accent, or flowering landscape tree. It is also drought tolerant once established and can be used as a pollinator for apple trees.
