Description
The Red Oak is a native large tree with dense foliage making it a great shade tree. Red oak has a beautiful brilliant red color in the fall. In Iowa, the Red Oak can be found growing in the upland woods. Good food source for blue jays, wild turkeys, squirrels, deer, raccoons, & black bears. Valuable lumber tree.

The red oak makes a good windbreak or yard tree, grows up to 75 ft tall, and can spread up to 75 ft wide. It grows well in Zone 4-8 and does grow quite fast 2+ feet per year in moist, well-drained soil. They are a strong long-lived tree. Does not do well in heavy or wet soils.
For a deciduous windbreak, we recommend putting them with other species and spacing them 12 ft apart in a single row, we like to use them on the outside of evergreen windbreaks if you have room. Keep 30 ft from any evergreens to prevent light and root competition. If wanting to use deciduous trees for a windbreak contact us on what is currently working best for your situation.
